Second Year MA Students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation Helped a Ph.D. Student of ASU to Get a Ph.D. degree

Adelya Baymukhambetova, a postgraduate student of Astrakhan State University, defended a thesis for the European Ph.D. degree in Biotechnology & Chemistry. She worked on a thesis “The Research on Extraction of the Chemical Composition and Properties of Biologically Active Components of Some Plants from Asteraceae” within the framework of a joint Ph.D. programme of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy, and Astrakhan State University.
The thesis defense took place at the Conference Interpreting Center of Astrakhan State University. The examination board consisted of Russian and Italian professors who needed high-quality simultaneous interpretation, which was perfectly provided by Bakhytgul Maymurenova and Polina Karabalaeva, our second year MA students.
The students thoroughly prepared for interpretation, translated the presentation and Adelya’s speech, examined the thesis itself and analyzed the methods, used in the research. Special attention was paid to the chemical aspect of the thesis, as the research was conducted by the Ph.D. student in laboratories of the Department of Environmental Sciences, Informatics and Statistics of Ca’ Foscari University.  The technology of video remote interpreting was used at the thesis defense. It is gaining popularity in modern conditions, as it allows to provide interpretation (including simultaneous one), no matter where the interpreters and the clients are.
As noted by the second year students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation, “The defense and preparation for the interpretation became an invaluable experience and helped to realize the importance of teamwork, because it’s a reliable fellow in the booth who helps to handle stress and various challenges that arise during the interpretation, be it speakers’ accents, unexpected questions, technical problems or use of proper terms.”
