Vadim V. Sdobnikov Visits the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation
Last week the MA students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation had the honour to attend a master class given by Vadim V. Sdobnikov, one of the most prominent figures of the translation theory in Russia and the President of the Board of the Union of Translators of Russia, who came to Astrakhan as a member of the International Federation of Translators (FIT) delegation. He is also a professor of the Department of Theory and Practice of English & Translation and Interpreting at the Linguistics University of Nizhny Novgorod named after N.A. Dobrolubov as well as the author of well-known manuals on the theory of translation, on interpretation and commercial translation.
At the beginning of the class, Vadim V. Sdobnikov and the MA students of first and second year had a Q&A discussion on some aspects of interpretation, useful skills for interpreters and, in particular, on compression in interpreting. After the lively discussion the MA students were invited to interpret simultaneously speeches delivered by some delegates of the business-dialogue “Russia-USA”, held at the platform of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The practical part of the class also included a full analysis and off-hand translation of the speeches made by the MA students and Vadim V. Sdobnikov. The LUNN professor’s master class was extremely fruitful. At the end of the class the MA students asked the guest several questions and thankfully received valuable advice of the experienced interpreter which will, beyond all doubt, come in handy in their future career.
