Lessons with Liam Long
20th to 24th April, MA students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation had lessons with Liam Long, a leading interpreterof the European Commission. This time the expert had 2 main tasks: firstly, to give classes of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation to the first year students, and secondly, to prepare second year students for final exams. Our colleague from Brussels gave helpful advice to the students on some grammar aspects and correct choice of words in the Russian and English languages. Classes were rather intense: some students performed simultaneousinterpretationsand consecutivewith note-taking, then they all discussed the pros and cons of the performances, asked the experienced interpreter questions. It should be noted that almost all the speeches for interpreting was delivered by Liam Long as listening to a native speaker is not only pleasant but useful as well. Moreover, Liam Long shared with students some practical aspects of the interpreting, explained how to improve note-taking technique and, of course, gave valuable feedbacks as a native English speaker. Like all the previous times here, the expert assessed the students’ development of interpreting skills. After all, development is a key to success!
