For Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation spring is the time of video conferences – this year is not an exception.
On March 17, the School held a trilateral video conference with Comillas Pontifical University (Madrid, Spain) and Bogazici University (Istanbul, Turkey) as part of the project financed by the European Parliament Directorate General for Interpretation and Conferences. The topic of the virtual class was Oil and Gas. Logical links and their interpretation were chosen as the pedagogical difficulty. The first to take the floor was Ebru Diriker, a speaker from Bogazici University. She delivered a speech in Turkish which was interpreted into Russian by our 2-nd MA student Liliya Petrova and into Spanish by a student from Comillas Pontifical University.
The teachers marked good presentation in Russian and good choice of words. The same speech was interpreted into English by a student from Bogazici University. The teachers highly appreciated students’ interpretation and gave some recommendations on rendering logical links in the interpretation.
Elena Yakovleva, a School leading teacher, told the students about some challenges an interpreter faces while interpreting logical link and gave advice on ways to preserve the links and the structure of the speech in interpretation.
The next to take the floor was a speaker from Comillas Pontifical University who delivered a speech in Spanish. One of their students interpreted the speech into English and, according to the teachers, she did a very good job. Margarita Povkh interpreted the speech into Russian and our teachers appreciated her interpretation, especially full delivery of the content and structure of the interpretation. Ekaterina Krylova, a Spanish teacher and staff member of the Astrakhan State University Centre for Translation Studies and Conference Interpretation, gave a feedback to Margarita’s interpretation as well.
Following the results of the conference, all the feedbacks, as well as speeches and interpretations, will be uploaded to the portal specially created for the project, so that both students and trainers of the interpretation and translation schools could study all the given information and find something useful and important for them.
