CITS Staff Provides Linguistic Support at Memorable Event in Honor of Omar Khayyam
17 May saw a commemoration meeting in honor of Omar Khayyam, a great Iranian scientist, poet and philosopher. The event was held at the ASU Students’ Park and was timed to the visit of Hadi Goudarzi, Counselor for Science and Education of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Russia, to our university.
Mahbood Fazeli, a professor of the Persian language and literature at Al-Zahra University, moderated the event with the help of Persian language students.
Students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and the Faculty of International Relations, Iranian students of ASU and Iranians living in Astrakhan participated in the event. It started with a welcoming speech of Mehdi Akuchekian, the Council-General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Astrakhan. Then Prof. Fazeli gave a speech on the impact of Omar Khayyam to the global science and philosophy, and the students recited Khayyam’s ruba’i, short philosophical poems, in Persian. CITS staff Dmitry Marshalkin provided interpretation of Ms. Fazeli’s speech into Russian.
At the end of the event, the participants laid the flowers to the statue of Omar Khayyam.
Such events strengthen the friendly nations between Iran and Russia and provide an opportunity for interpreters to hone their professional skills.
