Thesis defence is over!
On May, 31 the second year MA students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation successfully defended their qualification papers! In the course of the defence lasting 4 hours the MA students presented their works devoted to different linguistic issues and phenomena and, primarily, to translating and interpreting issues: translating of acronyms, realia, metaphors, borrowings; peculiarities of headline translating; analysis of grammatical transformations in fiction translation and so on. The practical study on chosen topics was a valuable part of students’ works: besides the detailed examination of theoretical basics of different linguistic phenomena, the students dealt with practical materials (fiction texts, social, political and economic articles, proverbs), drew samples and quantitatively analyzed frequency of usage of different translation techniques taking into account context peculiarities and making appropriate conclusions which were presented as the results of their study. In general the MA students managed to defend their theses and most of them got “good” and “excellent”. In the nearest future the students will face the most difficult stage – the final exam on consecutive and simultaneous interpreting where the teachers of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation as well as the guest interpreters from the European Commission, European Parliament and Linguistic Support Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation will assess the students’ competence level and those interpreting skills which have been developed by them during the 2 year study period.
