MA students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation volunteering at the “Kaspiy-2016″exercises
It is the second year the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation has been collaborating with the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the RF in the Astrakhan region.
From 20 to 22 September 2016 the international integrated exercises “Kaspiy -2016”,together with the representatives of the Emergency Agencies of Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran, were held in the Astrakhan region and the Caspian Sea.
This was the reason why the MES leadership referred to Olga G. Egorova, the Head of the Caspian Higher of School of Interpreting and Translating, for assistance in providing language support. The master students volunteeredto act as interpreters during these exercises.
This time, the task was carried out by Dina Satkaeva and Rufina Ismailova, the second-year MA students, as well as Anton Totoev, Dmitry Shashkin, Alexandr Tereshchenko and Yusupov Isa, 3rd- and the 5th-year students of the ofthe Department of Oriental languages. Students were in the MES call-center during the exercises, ready to interpret by conference call.
Although it is not the first time for the master students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation to act as interpreters at international events, the participation in international integrated exercises of the MES is the first experience in this field. So they needed substantial preparations for the interpretation: it was necessary to get a grip of the terminology used in this field, to learn about the peculiarities of rescue system functioning in case of emergencies, and many other subtle subjects.Understanding of these things is crucial for providing correct interpretation.
Thus, the “Kaspiy-2016” exercises are another valuable contribution to the asset of our MA students’ interpretation experience!
