FNJUBhI_1eYOn 27-31 October, MA students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation had lessons with Ilga Berzina and Liam Long, interpreters from the European Parliament and the European Commission. This time our professionals had two main tasks: firstly, to organise an aptitude test for the new master programme students, and secondly, to give classes of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation to the students. Like all the previous times here, our colleagues from Brussels gave helpful advice to the students on some grammar aspects such as use of articles, tenses and countable and uncountable nouns. Besides Ilga Berzina shared, for instance, some practical aspects of interpreting, explaining how to overcome stress, how to avoid mistakes in interpretation and how to organise your notes so that all the relevant information was there and with particular attention to the precise idea concluding the speech. During his lessons, Liam Long stressed upon the use of countable and uncountable nouns, articles and some verbs. He also focused on consecutive interpretation from Russian into English and on teamwork in the booth giving valuable feedback not only as an interpreter, but as a native speaker as well. The professionals also drew attention to the presentation of interpretation and spoke about lexico-grammatical transformations on simplifying sentences, on the ways to highlight main ideas and preserv links between them. They also emphasised the importance of the last sentence in interpretation.
