October was a very fruitful month for the students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation as a lot of foreign experts visited our University.  It is gratifying that our students have an excellent opportunity to practice interpreting skills and gain a valuable experience.

The International Week of Financial Literacy was held at Astrakhan State University from 12th to 16th October. Phil Schuman, the Director of Financial Literacy for Indiana University, was a special guest of this event. During his visit, he was delivering everyday lectures for the students of the Department of Business and Economics, the Department of Management, the Department of Social Communication and others.

Prof. Schuman told about current economic situation in the USA, its taxation system, bank services and credit granting. He drew a particular attention to the issue of financial literacy among the students pointing out that a high level of knowledge in this sphere will help students in their professional development.

1st  and 2nd year Master students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation provided consecutive interpretation of the lectures delivered by Phil Schuman. While providing the interpretation, the students faced some difficulties like pace of the speaker, accent and abundance of financing terms. Despite these difficulties, our students provided a very good interpretation.

During his stay, Phil Schuman also visited a conference interpreting room of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation and commended the high level of training of future interpreters.

The International financial literacy week was extremely useful for the students of Astrakhan State University. Master students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation had one more opportunity to a real-life experience of interpretation in financial field.  They successfully coped with this task and provided for communication between the Professor and the students. We hope to see Prof. Schuman again and have one more chance to try our hand in economic interpreting.
