Virtual class with the European Commission

On 25th November we held the last virtual class in November, this time – with the Directorate-General for Interpretation of the European Commission. The speeches were presented in English, Italian and Russian. DG interpreter Michael Sommers told the students about the ways to prepare for the doomsday, and about the most extraordinary thief living in the city of Bedminster. Alessandra Albasini prepared Italian speeches about some remarkable properties of plants and about the harm which such a useful thing as sports can do. As for the interpretation from Russian into English Elena Yakovleva who was a Russian speaker presented a speech on a quite unusual topic, even a surprising one for the DG interpreters: Why don’t Japanese want to marry and what does it mean for the global economy? Kermen Ivikova and Inga Petryakova interpreted from English into Russian, Radoslava Maltseva and Diana Kadyrmatova interpreted from Italian into Russian and Ekaterina Krylova interpreted from Russian into English.

In general the students managed to complete their interpretation task and they received a detailed feedback from Michael Sommers and Alessandra Albasini, who gave useful comments on the interpretation structure, rendering some important details, choice of linguistic means both in mother tongue and in target language. Now preparing for another virtual class with our Brussels colleagues, the master program students know what they should pay attention to and which mistakes they should avoid in the interpretation.
