Introducing WIPO: CITS first-year MA Students Learn About the International Patent System and the Work of Terminologists.
On December 7, Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation held an online meeting with Geoffrey Westgate, Head of the Support Section of PCT Translation Division, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). CITS MA students and senior bachelor students from ASU attended the event. During the meeting, students learned about the international patent system, which serves to assist patent offices in deciding whether to grant a patent and introduces users to modern inventions.
In his presentation, Geoffrey Westgate also spoke about the WIPO Pearl database, which facilitates the search and exchange of scientific and technical information and terms in different languages. The students were shown various concept maps and language search features of the website. The expert emphasized that each of the MA students has the opportunity to be placed in an internship at WIPO and subsequently get a job at the organisation.
Geoffrey Westgate highlighted the free WIPO Academy programmes to train future WIPO interns which prepare students for future careers within the organisation. The discussion was productive and the expert thanked the students for their participation in the event, stressed the importance of cooperation between ASU and WIPO and wished them further success.
