This year, from November 11 to 23, Ulyana Savelyeva, a trainer of terminology at Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation, undertook a traineeship WIPO.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a global forum dedicated to policy issues, strengthening cooperation, providing services and disseminating information in the field of intellectual property. WIPO is a self-financing agency of the United Nations system and has 192 Member States.

“For us, this is a unique opportunity to become part of a global project, to learn about how the UN agency works from the inside. In addition, this is a great chance to have a clearer and more complete understanding of how a terminology base is maintained. I am very grateful to ASU management for this invaluable experience”, Ulyana Savelyeva shares her impressions.

The organization has developed a multilingual terminology base WIPO PEARL, the purpose of which is to provide access to scientific and technical terms derived from patent documents. This database promotes the accurate and consistent use of terms in different languages, making the search and exchange of scientific and technical knowledge easier. By the way, ASU is the only university in Russia participating in the WIPO PEARL project.

During the traineeship, CITS trainer tried on the role of a student who was given the task of searching and verifying seismology terms. Ulyana Savelyeva studied dozens of sources, analyzed scientific articles and, one might say, mastered the basics of seismology.

She was given a difficult task – to choose the terms so that they are further accepted by experts who speak English and Russian.

“Sometimes I had to spend half a day on it. But that was worth it”, said Ulyana Savelyeva.

The trainer also emphasized that at meetings with the heads of various WIPO departments, she was pleased to hear positive reviews about the work of Astrakhan State University students. WIPO representatives greatly appreciate and thank the CITS MA students for their contribution to this important project!

Currently, MA students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation are beginning to work on the development of new terms on various topics. We hope that experience gained during the traineeship will help to achieve even greater results.
