Handwavy First Aid: First Aid Workshop in RSL at CITS

A first aid workshop with RSL interpretation was held at CITS on February 20, with graduates of CITS courses interpreting into Russian Sign Language. Valentina Pokusaeva, a senior instructor of the Astrakhan Regional Branch of the Russian Red Cross, was an invited expert. Both hearing and hearing-impaired people took an active part in the event.

The participants learned the basic principles and procedures of first aid and were informed about the proper behaviour in different situations. During the workshop, the students learned how to help an injured person take a recovery position, how cardiopulmonary resuscitation is performed and how one can help a person with complete or partial respiratory tract obstruction.

The workshop programme included both theory and practice, with the trainer giving the participants a clear demonstration of how to act in certain cases and answering all their questions. In addition, the students had the opportunity to try their hand at the things learned on dummies under the instructor’s supervision.
