The 10th cohort of graduates of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation are preparing to receive their coveted diplomas and a Master’s degree in linguistics! The CITS translation and interpretation students have successfully passed their final tests and defended their theses.

2nd-Year MA Students Successfully Passed the Final FrontierThe first stage of the final tests was a state examination in translation or interpretation, designed to check all the knowledge and skills our MA students had acquired during their two years of intensive study. The students of the translation programme practiced translation and translation analysis, while our interpreters demonstrated their consecutive and simultaneous interpretation skills dealing with four speeches on various topics.

Moreover, a few days earlier the MA  students who participated in the terminology project to replenish the WIPO Pearl database had an online meeting with Jeffrey Westgate, Head of the Support Section of PCT Translation Division, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), where they summed up their projects, analyzed the mistakes and demonstrated theoretical knowledge of terminology.

The final stage of testing was the defense of Master’s theses, where our students flawlessly presented their projects on a variety of topics. For example, the very first speakers were MA translation students with a teamwork project on terminology. A practical contribution of this work was the publication of a dictionary of shipbuilding terms in English, Italian and Chinese. The Master’s students did an incredible job, constantly consulted with experts and professional shipbuilders in order to present a quality product.

2nd-Year MA Students Successfully Passed the Final FrontierCooperation with Rospatent in preparing MA projects has become a good tradition of our school. This year, two more of our graduates successfully defended their theses, studying terminology and searching for equivalents under the guidance of Rospatent experts. The students studied the requirements for the design of terms and got acquainted with the specifics of working at the international organization.

Trends in translation were not ignored either: during their Master’s studies, our students worked on the translation and dubbing of the film Moment by Moment: The Healing Journey of Molly Hale. Audiovisual translation captivated the Master’s students so strongly that they decided to study the topic in more detail. Karine Melkonyan has been working on the translation of foreign films trailers for a year and has collected a lot of practical material for analysis during this time. Anastasia Anferova has been working in the media for more than ten years and chose to study the issues of preserving humor in audiovisual translation.

We congratulate our Master’s students on the successful completion of their studies and final tests. We know how excited and anxious the students were during the exam and how much effort they put into their research. We are proud of our graduates and wish them great success in translation and interpretation!
