The Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation tries to keep its students engaged in real-life translation as often as possible in order to form a clear idea of what to expect from the profession they have chosen. In late October, employees of the Astrakhan Regional Office of the Russian Red Cross Society asked CITS to help in translating materials for the upcoming international conference, which was only a few days away. The teamwork was quickly organized, and in three days, our MA students managed to perform high-quality translation of documents on medical subjects. The students coped with the task with dignity and got into the deadline, and the regional branch of the Russian Red Cross, in turn, thanked them for their cooperation and active participation in charitable and humane activities with letters of appreciation.

Polina Tulyakova, a 1st year MA student, shares her impressions from this volunteering experience:

“The profession of a translator is full of surprises. Another busy study week just ended and a long-awaited weekend and rest was ahead of us, but it did not work that way, a new “order” was in the offing! The translator is an anonymous foot soldier, who must be always ready for anything. Despite the tight deadlines and difficult topics, the project was completed on time, and the experts from Russian Red Cross Society highly appreciated our work.”
