Astrakhan hosted the Second Qualification Tournament of 2016 Men’s European Water Polo Championship on 25-27 September. MA students got a chance not only to watch keenly contested matches between different national teams but to communicate with team members while they were providing interpretation for contestants and referees. The Championship participants being the guests of the city were invited to take part in an interesting sightseeing excursion tour. Referees from Switzerland, Belarus, the Netherlands and Ukraine visited the Kremlin complex, made a stop at the Kremlin Magazine and the Torture Tower, went upstairs to the top of the Crimean Cathedral and the Assumption Cathedral Upper Church. MA students helped the guests during sightseeing as they are experienced enough in interpreting of excursion tours. Despite being offered a varied cultural program, most of the time the referees and students worked at Zvezdny Sports Complex where the former presided over the games delivering impartial assessment while the latter interpreted. There is no such thing as a tie game in water polo especially when it comes to getting to the final of the European Water Polo Championship.

Russia national men’s water polo team won three matches in the second round of the Qualification Tournament, having successively outplayed Latvia (37:0), Turkey (11:8) and Portugal (16:4) national teams. Mikhail Krasnov, the player of the Astrakhan Dinamo, managed to score 10 goals. At the European Championship, the Russian team will compete for the berth at Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. The drawing procedure for the tournament final round will be held on October 4, 2015 in Belgrade, Serbia. We can only wish good luck to our sportsmen.

The Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation students were pleased with an opportunity to interpret for sportsmen and we are looking forward to hosting another international level sport event in our city.
