yawkhe7z3quOn March 2, the 1st and 2nd year master students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation had a mock conference on social media and the role it plays in our lives – quite a pressing issue of the 21st century. The students were delivering speeches and interpreted them simultaneously. They were acting as journalists, bloggers and even Russian celebrities. 4 interesting and informative speeches had been prepared in the English, Russian and French languages. After every speech, the speakers were asked questions, which helped the participants to understand the topic under discussion better.
In fact, the given issue is very congenial for the master students, as they use social media not only to chat with friends but also to interact with their group mates and trainers more effectively.
The 1st year master students whose major is translation also took part in the class. During the conference, the translators-to-be were writing scripts of the speeches in order to make translation afterwards. After the conference, Olga Egorova, the director of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation discussed with the students the results of their work, pointed out some mistakes that had been made during the simultaneous interpretation and gave some valuable tips on how to correct them. The 2nd year MA students also shared their experience with the younger colleagues and gave them some advice as well. The classes like this one are valuable for future interpreters and translators, as they have a chance to master their interpreting and translating skills, imagine themselves being at a real conference, discuss important topics and improve background knowledge.
