CATs. Webinar on Smartcat Cloud-Based Tools and Translation Industry Trends

Do you know what CAT is and how this technology can help you in your work weather you are just starting your translation career or already work as a translator? There is no need to rush in case you have just grabbed your cat and tried to get an answer. Its “meow” will mean only that your cat has nothing to do with it.
On March 16, the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation hosted a webinar on automated translation technology (Computer-Aided Translation, abbr. CAT) and on translation industry trends. Maksim Morkovkin, a manager of SmartCat company responsible for Asian and African clients, who by the way graduated from our Department of Foreign Languages, told the ASU students what CAT is and how this technology increases efficiency and productivity for both translators and clients.
In this day and age, the world is moving fast. New technologies emerge, more information is being generated and consumed. This causes higher demand for translation services on one hand, and on the other hand the requirements for a translator are ever higher. A translator is to know how to get clients, be aware of the legal aspects of the job, be skillful with various software, etc. Maksim also explained to the students of the Foreign Languages Department and the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation what translation memory is and how a properly prepared terminology glossary benefits to terminology consistency of your translation. He also explained what post-editing is and how the same document can be translated and edited by different people at the same time.
Giving SmartCat, one of the leading suppliers of CAT tools, as an example, Maksim showed that software can be free of charge and easy to start using. He also shared several tips about searching projects and translators.
