MA students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation meet with an American trainer Gretchen Fernholz
On September, 18 the Duma elections were held in Russia. We all know how elections are held in our country, but we have little knowledge of the election process in other states. While the 58th US presidential elections are coming and they are very important not only for the Americans but for the whole world. The pre-election campaign is in full spate. Certainly, we couldn’t but discuss this issue during our classes. Moreover, we had an oversea guest! On September, 27 the MA students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation held a joint class with an American trainer Gretchen Fernholz who came to Astrakhan State University for the first time within the framework of the Fulbright Fellowship program. Gretchen made a speech on topic “US Presidential Election 2016”. She told MA students how the presidential elections are held in the USA and what the US citizens think about them. Two MA students Polina Karabalaeva and Ilya Shuminov also presented their speeches during the class. Polina told about the Russian Duma elections held recently, while Ilya gave an overview of the Russians’ common opinion on the upcoming US elections. The discussion was held both in English and Russian, and the second-year MA students provided our American guest with simultaneous interpreting. At the end of the class, Gretchen Fernholz and the trainers of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation Olga Egorova and Ulyana Savelyeva commented on the simultaneous interpreting and the lesson itself. Gretchen noted MA students’ high level of training and was amazed at how difficult it is to be a simultaneous interpreter.
