Astrakhan State University is a partner of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in the field of terminology. MA students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation have been working on the WIPO Pearl project for three years already, replenishing the terminology base related to patent documentation.

Patent documentation includes a rather complicated vocabulary, which must be thoroughly verified and double-checked in the most careful way. The material should be selected in an appropriate way, so that patentees and patent experts can use the correct and unified terminology. Our students are currently working on this challenging task.

First-year MA students began their work in April. We are pleased to announce that the first stage – the selection of terms in English – was successfully completed, and we have received a very positive feedback from WIPO experts.

Head of the Support Section of PCT Translation Service of the World Intellectual Property Organization, Geoffrey Westgate, and his colleagues held a special workshop with the students from the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation and project leader Ulyana Savelyeva.

During the workshop, students became more familiar with the activities of WIPO, analyzed in detail the concept of the word “term” and the difference between a “term” and a usual word. In addition, WIPO experts answered students’ questions concerning their project work. Next stage is the selection of Russian equivalents and their contexts. At the end of the workshop, WIPO experts wished the CITS students further success in working on the WIPO Pearl project.
